The brand was created by Galinda Wang, a Taiwanese immigrant who studied textile design at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) after initially planning a career in medicine. La Chine, Inc., the parent company, grew from a garage start-up with $5,000 in capital to a business generating $12 million to $15 million in sales from over 4,000 retailers nationwide by 1996. The company also operated several full-priced and outlet stores. Ms. Wang designed all the company's fabrics, balancing bright florals popular in the Southern U.S. with subtle neutrals favored in the Northeast. Galinda Wang was also noted for her community involvement, founding the American Chinese Business Association in 1990 to help immigrant women with job searching and starting businesses.
